Um.. no..Ya know man, pulling the hammer back DOES have a worthwhile effect, at least on revolvers. They're double action which means you can just fire away and the gun will do all the work. But if you pull the hammer back first, the shot is more powerful because the hammer doesn't go back as far automatically. So yeah, it IS mostly for intimidation in those scenes, but it also makes sense.
